Upper School Math Curriculum
Listed below is a short summary of the math concepts we will be discussing in the various math classes during the 2011-2012 school year.
5th Grade Math-Investigations
The math program focuses on helping students make sense of mathematics in meaningful ways. Students will develop a strong number sense which will help them become more proficient with computation and better problem solvers. The math program will incorporate manipulatives and pictorial models. Math topics include; data and graphs, operations on whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Additionally, they will work with geometry, measurement and be introduced to the concept of ratio, percent, and probability.
6th Grade Math—Middle School Math—Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley
Students will learn about math in their own world and develop problem solving techniques that will work in everyday life. Math topics include; statistics and the real world use of whole numbers, decimals, measurement, patterns and number theory, adding and subtracting fractions, and connecting arithmetic to algebra. The math program will incorporate manipulatives and pictorial models.
7th Grade Math—Pre-Algebra—Textbook, Prentice Hall Mathematics
Students will build an understanding of integer operations, rates, ratios, proportions and percents, both computations and applications. They will work with exponents (including scientific notation). Estimation skills are maintained. The math program will incorporate manipulatives and pictorial models.
8th Grade Math—Algebra 1—Textbook, Prentice Hall Mathematics Students will build an understanding of real numbers by using symbolic graphic, and numeric representations as they solve equations and inequalities. Work with rational and radical expressions, equations, and functions build a wide base of experience with rational and irrational numbers. Matrices are introduced. The math program will incorporate manipulatives and pictorial models.
