Physical and Health Education

The purpose of PE at SBS is to offer students activities that blend many concepts and discoveries- including the role of movement, skill acquisition, rhythms, emotions, positive thinking, routines, environments, novelty, and the absence of intimidation- into a delightful PE environment that ensures optimal learner success. The unique needs of our student population are address not only for physical development, but also for personal, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Developmentally appropriate activities are planned and implemented according to State and national PE standards.

Upper School Physical Education curriculum includes team sports (soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and wiffle ball), racquet sports (pickleball and badminton), tumbling and gymnastics, cooperative/team building activites and personal living skills.

Intramurals 

Students in the Upper School also are allowed to take part in our after school intramural program.  Intramurals is designed for students to engage in healthy competition while particpating in a variety of team sports and activites.  The sports that are covered but not limited too are: soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, tumbling and gymnastics, wiffle ball, and ultimate frisbee.

Physical Education Program Objectives
  1. Provide vigorous and non-vigorous activities that take into account the individual's level of ability, capacity, and interest.
  2. Provide opportunities to develop understanding of skills and skills specific to traditional and non-traditional games and sports.
  3. Allow students opportunity to learn and expand their athletic interests.
  4. Provide students with activities that explore physical and non-physical objectives.
  5. Find joy and satisfaction in movement.
  6. Accept failure and individual skill differences.
  7. Recognize the need for safety practices while participating in physical activity.
  8. Provide students with individual as well as cooperative activities.
  9. Learn to work together to resolve conflict.
  10. Cooperating with teammates and opponents in competitive activities.
  11. Value the contributions of others and self.
  12. Provide opportunities for exploration, practice, questions, and class discussions.
  13. Win or lose, first or last - HAVE FUN!

 

Health

The Health curriculum recognizes the importance of being physically as well as mentally fit. The purpose of the Health curriculum is to provide students with the knowledge for a healthy and active lifestyle, injury and disease prevention, human growth and development, and substance abuse prevention.

The Upper School Health curriculum includes disease prevention, human growth and development, nutrition, drug awareness and prevention, personal health and hygiene, first aid and safety, conflict resolution, violence prevention, and fitness and exercise.
