Math

The SBS Math curriculum coincides with both the state and national standards set for students in each elementary/middle school grades. A major role of Mathematics is to build a community of independent thinkers. At the middle-school level, children need to begin to develop thought processes and strategies for solving problems and making mathematical decisions on their own. Our methods of instruction are used to build individual recognition and processing skills in order to think independently.

A balanced approach -- Concept vs. Computation

Although there are many ways in which teaching and learning of Mathematics has evolved, there is still a very real need for memorization and rote computational skills in middle-school math. In the SBS Upper School each mathematical topic is introduced with two main concerns in mind: concept and computation.

  • Concept -- The children are engaged through problem-solving and hands-on activities to gain a clear understanding behind the meaning of each math concept.
  • Computation -- Once the students reach an appropriate level of understanding for a given concept, it becomes just as important to solve, practice and compute with accuracy and speed.
