Teaching and Learning at Side by Side

Side by Side teachers have developed a Scope and Sequence for language, music, mathematics, physical education, science, and social studies across all grade levels. This Scope and Sequence is based on National and Connecticut State Standards for curriculum, and on the following guiding principles for teaching and learning:

  • Everyone learns differently.
  • Children lean best through experience.
  • Children construct their own knowledge.
  • Children learn best by interacting with each other and their environment.
  • Learning happens best in context and for real purposes.
  • Teaching and learning are most successful when they are based on the learner's stage of development.
  • A successful learner is able to make choices, work cooperatively with others, and be self-directed.

In the middle school model, students work with a certified classroom teacher and an intern or assistant in each core subject area (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science). This provides a unique opportunity for individual, small group and whole group instruction. All students also receive instruction in movement and physical education, music, and integrated art from certified specialist teachers.
