Writing is an integral part of the academic program at SBS. Children write every day, for a variety of purposes and learn many different forms of writing. We believe children's writing progresses developmentally and children develop at different rates. As with reading, we continually assess the children's writing to determine where they are on the developmental continuum, and then tailor our instruction to help them progress and develop as writers.
Writing skills are taught through whole and small group instruction, and independent writing conferences. Students in the early grades (K & 1) explore writing simple stories and about their lives. In grades 2 through 4, students receive direct instruction in writing narrative stories using the Empowering Writer's framework developed by Barbara Maraconda. Students across all grades are also exposed to developmentally appropriate aspects of procedural writing and informational reports.
Grammar and spelling are taught through mini-lessons as they become developmentally appropriate. Early writers use invented spelling and may explore various print conventions. As they become emergent writers in grades 1 and 2, students receive direct instruction in specific spelling and grammar rules. Students in grades 3 and 4 continue to receive direct instruction in spelling and grammar rules, and are expected to apply most conventions of written language.
