Side by Side teachers have developed a Scope and Sequence for language, music, mathematics, physical education, science, and social studies for across all grade levels. This Scope and Sequence is based on National and Connecticut State Standards for curriculum, and on the following guiding principles for teaching and learning:
- Everyone learns differently
- Children learn best through experience
- Children construct their own knowledge
- Children learn best by interacting with each other and their environment
- Learning happens best in context and for real purposes
- Teaching and learning are most successful when they are based on the learner's stage of development
- A truly successful learner must be able to make choices, be self-directed, and be able to work with others
Students work with a certified classroom teacher and an intern or assistant at every grade level. This provides a unique opportunity for individual, small group and whole group instruction. In the lower grades (3s through 4th grade) classroom teachers provide instruction in all subject areas. Beginning in 5th grade, students are taught by specific subject area teachers (Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science). All students also receive instruction in movement and physical education, music, and integrated art from certified specialist teachers.
